Adaptation:
Throughout the United States.

Planting Time:
See
Earliest Dates for Spring Planting of Vegetables.

Planting Method:
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Thin seedlings or set transplants to grow 18 to 24 inches apart.

Soil:
Any good garden soil that is rich in organic matter. pH 5.5 to 7.5.

Fertilizer:
At planting time, use 3 to 4 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, or 1 pound per 25-foot row. Side-dress every 3 to 4 weeks with 1 pound per 25-foot row, or 1 to 2 tablespoons per plant.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water at each irrigation to wet the soil 10 to 12 inches deep.

Containers: 10 percent of the applied water should drain out the bottom.

How often: Water when the soil 2 inches deep is barely moist.

Harvest:
Green or yellow peppers: Pick when of usable size with a rich color. Fruit should be slightly soft.

Red peppers: Red peppers are green peppers that have remained on the plants and matured. Pick when they have a rich red color. Cut peppers from the plant with pruning shears or a sharp knife, leaving ½ to 1 inch of the stem attached. Cool in the refrigerator.
